A remarkable and seldom-seen Winchester, this Model 1903 Deluxe Special Order .22 Auto, manufactured in 1905, represents one of the most refined rimfire rifles of its era. Factory engraved in the No. 8 engraving pattern—as illustrated on page 265 of The Book of Winchester Engraving—this rifle stands firmly in the upper tier of Winchester’s early custom offerings and is accompanied by a factory letter confirming its special-order status.
Of particular note, this rifle was special ordered without the magazine hole in the stock, a highly unusual and desirable configuration that sets it apart even among engraved examples. It features a 20" barrel fitted with factory Lyman sights, a deluxe checkered stock, and a correct steel butt plate, all executed to a very high standard.
Condition is excellent, showing only light handling to the wood and metal surfaces, with crisp engraving, strong finishes, and outstanding overall presentation. Weighing 5 lbs 14 oz with a 13¼" LOP, it retains the elegant balance and handling that made the Model 1903 such a successful design.
An exceptional factory-engraved, special-order Model 1903 with rare configuration and documentation—quite simply, you will be hard-pressed to find a finer example.
