A correct pre-war Purdey Best sidelock, completed in 1908, offering classic London form with honest, shootable condition at a compelling entry point into true Best guns. Built during Purdey’s golden era, this example carries the proportions and balance that made the firm’s pre-war guns the benchmark for driven shooting.
The gun is fitted with 29" solid rib barrels choked .007 and .042, chambered 2¾", with bores measuring .737 / .737 and remaining wall thickness of .023 right / .024 left. Configuration is traditional and purposeful with double triggers, splinter forearm, and a straight English grip. An Old English recoil pad has been fitted for shootability.
Condition is good, refinished, showing light handling consistent with use. Notably, the English grip had a crack that has been properly repaired—stable and serviceable, fully disclosed and reflected in value. At 6 lbs 8 oz, the gun remains lively and well balanced, with dimensions that suit modern shooters.
A genuine pre-war Purdey Best with classic specs and real field utility—ideal for the sportsman who wants London Best quality without paying a museum-grade premium, or the collector seeking an honest, shootable Purdey with early 20th-century pedigree.
