A classic post-war London best, this James Purdey & Sons Best sidelock SxS 12 gauge, completed in 1957, reflects Purdey’s mature self-opening era—elegant, restrained, and built squarely for serious shooting.

The gun is fitted with 26" solid rib barrels choked Improved Cylinder and Modified (.005 / .018) with 2¾" chambers, an exceptionally versatile setup for driven game or upland use. Features include a self-opening action, single trigger, ejectors, beavertail forearm, English grip, and a leather-covered recoil pad, blending traditional London styling with modern field practicality.

Condition is excellent, near-new and original, retained with notable care and accompanied by its maker’s case. Weighing 6 lbs 14 oz, the gun balances with authority without feeling heavy—very much a “field-balanced” Purdey rather than a lightweight specialist.

Stock dimensions measure 2 1/16" DAH, 1 3/8" DAC, and 14 5/8" LOP, making it both comfortable and forgiving to mount.

A highly desirable mid-century Purdey Best, combining post-war refinement, usable chokes, and outstanding originality—an example that is equally at home in the field or in a serious London-gun collection.
