PURDEY BEST PRE WAR SXS 12 GAUGE

A superb pre-war Purdey Best sidelock, completed in 1923, representing London gunmaking at its absolute height. This is a correct, powerful, and beautifully preserved Best gun, configured for serious driven shooting and offered in excellent original condition.

The gun is fitted with 30" solid rib barrels choked .023 and .042, chambered 2¾", and nitro proofed for 1¼ oz loads—a specification that places it firmly in the category of authoritative pre-war game guns. Bores measure .730 left / .731 right with strong remaining wall thickness (.028 / .029), underscoring both originality and mechanical health.

Classic Best features include side clips, double triggers, automatic ejectors, a splinter forearm, straight English grip, and a checkered butt. At 7 lbs 6 oz, the gun has the forward authority expected of a 30" Purdey while remaining beautifully balanced and alive in the hands.

Condition is excellent and original, showing only light, honest handling consistent with careful use over a century. The gun is housed in its oak and leather case with accessories, completing a presentation that is as correct as it is desirable.

A textbook example of a pre-war Purdey Best 12-bore—powerful, elegant, and built to a standard that has never been surpassed. An exceptional opportunity for the advanced collector or driven-bird sportsman seeking a true London Best with substance and history.
