A classic Victorian best gun by James Purdey & Sons, built during the golden age of London hammer guns. Based on Purdey production records, serial number 11,576 dates to approximately the mid-1880s, a period when the firm was producing some of the finest bar-action hammer guns ever made.
This example is fitted with 30" Damascus barrels with excellent bores, choked .016 and .026 with 2½" chambers, a configuration well suited for traditional game shooting. Built in the classic London style, the gun features double triggers, extractors, splinter forearm, and a straight English grip, maintaining the elegant proportions that define Purdey hammer guns of the period.
The gun has been completely restored, presenting beautifully while retaining the graceful balance expected of a best-quality Victorian sporting gun. Weight is 7 lbs 7 oz, giving the gun the steady feel typically associated with 30" barreled hammer guns.
Stock dimensions measure 2" drop at heel, 1 9/16" drop at comb, with a 14½" length of pull.
A fine and very shootable Purdey best hammer gun from the 1880s, combining classic Damascus barrels, traditional London styling, and the refined balance that made Purdey the benchmark for British sporting arms.
