JP (JOE) SMITHSON CUSTOM COMMERCIAL OBERNDORF MAGNUM SINGLE SQUARE BRIDGE MAUSER 416 RIGBY

Built on a true commercial Oberndorf Magnum Mauser action, this single square bridge .416 Rigby represents the very best of traditional dangerous-game rifle craft, executed by master gunmaker Joseph Smithson.

Smithson’s work combines old-world Mauser architecture with modern precision and practical African field use. The rifle features a 25" Krieger barrel with an integral quarter rib, regulated with one standing and one folding leaf sight (100 & 200 yards), and is paired with a claw-mounted Swarovski Habicht 1.5–4x34—a classic, bomb-proof optic solution perfectly suited for heavy game. A detachable muzzle brake with flush-mounted thread protector offers flexibility without compromising aesthetics.

Tasteful Roger Kehr engraving, steel-capped pistol grip with trap door, cheekpiece, barrel-band front swivel, and inletted rear sling stud complete a rifle that is both elegant and purpose-built. Balance and weight are exactly where they should be for a stopping rifle, coming in at 9 lbs 7 oz without the scope and 10 lbs 10 oz with it mounted.

Condition remains very good to excellent, showing only light handling consistent with careful storage and limited use. This is a serious Africa-ready rifle—built correctly, stocked properly, and executed by one of America’s most respected custom makers.

A rare opportunity to acquire a true Oberndorf-based Smithson Magnum Mauser in one of the world’s great dangerous-game calibers.
