This rifle isn’t important because it’s a .470—it's important because of when and where it sits in a great maker’s story.

This David McKay Brown Best Double Rifle in .470 Nitro Express, completed in 1993, is the second double rifle David ever built and his first in .470 NE—a formative piece from the earliest chapter of a career that would go on to define modern Scottish best-gun making. Rifles from this moment are not repetitions of an established formula; they are declarations of intent.

The rifle is fitted with 26" barrels regulated off a quarter rib with one standing and two folding sights, and stocked with the restraint and authority appropriate to the cartridge. Details include a steel-capped pistol grip with trap door, extended top tang, cheek piece, sling swivel studs, and a leather-covered recoil pad. Engraving was executed by Dave Hudson, whose work here complements the rifle without competing with its purpose.

At 12 pounds with a 14½" length of pull, the rifle carries the mass and composure demanded by a true dangerous-game cartridge, yet avoids excess. It is a rifle meant to be trusted, not admired from across the room—though it earns that as well.

Early David McKay Brown rifles seldom surface, and examples with this level of historical placement are rarer still. This is not simply a best .470; it is a marker—where a modern master began proving he belonged among them.
